On Monday night, First Lady Michelle Obama paid a visit to Maketto 1351.

Maketto was the country’s first-ever crowdfunded real estate project and Fundrise’s first offering in 2012. We used a (at the time) little known regulatory structure known as Regulation A, and it took us more than three months to raise $325,000 from 175 individuals in DC and Virginia with investments as low as $100.

Three years later, Maketto is open and one of DC’s most popular restaurants.

The First Lady’s visit and glowing reviews from national food critics prove that there is real value both for investors and communities in having small, local businesses as tenants.

The 175 investors in 1351 H Street are receiving regular returns and will continue to see yield as the H Street neighborhood booms.
